The Local Church

Seeing the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

I grew up in a good Christian family and I learned a lot about the Bible from a very young age; I would even say I loved the Lord as well as I knew how. But, my experience of the Lord was very limited--I was a kid and He was God, and not always a very real God either. He was an idea that I sort of knew, but never really tasted.

I went to college in Texas at a university with a lot of Christians, and I joined a student organization with a lot of brothers and sisters who meet with the local church. Because my experience of the Lord wasn't that extensive, I wasn't too sure why I was in the group. But one sister set up an appointment with me to read a book called The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by Watchman Nee. I had heard good things about the book, but I was still a bit skeptical about reading a “spiritual” book.

Nonetheless, the sister and I read through it one chapter a week until we were finished. I was blown away. God's relationship with me and mine with Him became so much clearer. He wasn't merely a faraway God to me--One that was too busy administrating a universe to care for me. He was One that led Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through tons of experiences that they might know Him more. And, as the sister pointed out, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob symbolize us as Christians. We have a God who is OURS--the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Both this sister and Watchman Nee's book helped me immensely. My hunger for the Lord, His Word and books expounding the Bible expanded. I was by no means a super-spiritual college student; rather, the experience gave me a normal appetite for my God.
